In the News: Project Calm, Mindfulness through Making

GIC_08_calmcoveruk

A few months ago I was approached to contribute to a new magazine titled Project Calm, a mindful magazine for creative types. Project Calm is all about “mindfulness through making”. It was an honour to be asked to contribute as mindful creativity is to close to my heart and soul. It’s also serendipitous that the magazine was launched during the Slow Living month focused on nurturing, given the magazine aims to help busy folk slow down and nurture themselves through craft, encouraging us all to channel our energies into creating mindful beauty.

Bringing mindfulness to craft and creativity is so important (which I wrote a little about here, in relation to picking flowers and making flower crowns), both in terms of the personal, spiritual and mental health benefits of mindfulness, but also the environmental benefits of being mindful about how and what we create. I am always inclined to create from natural materials as much as possible, so that our projects have no waste from packaging and is fully compostable (for example, Ro’s halloween Mother Nature costume, made from real leaves, or our holiday Botanical Advent).

For this first issue of Project Calm, I contributed my Real Flower Temporary Tattoos tutorial. It is so exciting to see my work in print!

GIC_08_p8-9_naturenews_72dpiCopies are almost sold out, so if you’d like one order soon. They are available for purchase here.

Here’s a little sample of what you’ll find in the issue among the four sections covering Home, Nature, Travel and Mind & Body:

  • Paper-based crafts to make, colour & create
  • Positive features to inspire and enrich
  • Case studies and profiles of successful creatives
  • Travel, retreats and courses to try
  • Papercutting template on card
  • Paper animal kits
  • Poster with floral illustrations

Or, you can take a look at the preview here…

Thank you to my friend Erin, the florist, who collected discarded petals and flowers for my tattoo project. And, thank you to Kate for connecting my work to the folks at Project Calm.

Best Friends Forever: Enfants Terribles Magazine New Issue Out!

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow” — Shakespeare

enfants terribles magazine

Issue 12 of Enfants Terribles Magazine entitled “Best Friends Forever” released a few days ago and once again I am blown away by what we have accomplished. With each issue I am more proud of what our talented little team can put together.

In this issue, we pay tribute to friendship in all it’s splendour. Old friends, new friends, best friends, imaginary friends. Friendship comes in all shapes and colours. Sometimes it grows effortlessly and out of the blue. Sometimes it lasts forever and sometimes an eternity fits into a short moment of time.

Here are just a few things you’ll find in this issue, which, by the way is available for free online:

THE KIDS KNOW BETTER
Our Children’s Voices feature is about opening our eyes to the wisdom our children possess naturally. We asked the kids to share their thoughts on how to be a good friend and you’ll love their answers for their clear-sightedness and open, honest hearts.

ALWAYS AN ADVENTURE
As with every issue, all editorials and artwork in the magazine has been created specifically for the issue’s theme, in order to give readers a unique and exciting visual storybook experience, that tells tales from the crooks and corners of our playful imaginations.

As always you’ll also find fun projects to do with your children, interviews with artists and small clothing companies, and plenty of visual inspiration. You can access the complete issue online for free.

You might notice that we’ve changed our look a little bit with this new issue. We have a new logo and thus also a new cover style. In close collaboration with our new art director Julie Panton we have worked hard to make Enfants Terribles Magazine into a playful and pleasant reading experience. I hope you like what we’ve done, just as I hope you’ll enjoy the Best Friends Forever issue.

Enjoy!

New Issue Out: Creatures of Light and Darkness

Issue 11 of Enfants Terribles Magazine released a few days ago and what an amazing issue it is (if I do say so myself!). Given the timing of the release being so close to the solstice we chose to focus on light and darkness and all its metaphorical permutations. Our photographers outdid themselves for this issue, you will want to check out the editorials. We also continued with our ‘Children’s Voices’ feature where we share children’s thoughts on the issue’s theme. This time we asked children about their understanding of life and death in humans, plants and machines. This is fast becoming my favourite feature, I could read a whole book of children’s voices.the Creatures of Lights and Darkness issue cover skygge lilleAs always you’ll also find fun projects to do with your children, interviews with artists and small clothing companies, and plenty of visual inspiration. You can access the complete issue online for free, so please have a look and let me know what you liked and what you would like to see in future issues.

This is our last issue of 2015 and we have some amazing things in store for 2016, I can’t wait to share them with you.

New Issue Out: Imagine Education

Issue 10 of Enfants Terribles Magazine released a few weeks ago. With it being our back-to-school issue, we explored the concept of ‘education’ from many perspectives, thinking about schooling around the world and different approaches to education and school subjects. We also started a new feature ‘Children’s Voices’ where we share children’s thoughts on the issue’s theme. For this issue, we hear from children from across the globe who are participating in different types of schooling from Montessori, to forest school, to french immersion. You’ll also find fun projects to do with your children, interviews with artists and small clothing companies, and plenty of visual inspiration. I hope you enjoy.

Interview with Enfants Terribles Magazine

One day last December I received a most unexpected email. It was from the editors at Enfants Terribles magazine. While I often read the magazine, I was a little confused since I had never written to them. I opened the email and found a lovely invitation to join their creative team! After my heart slowed down a bit, I wrote to them nervously explaining that I was not sure I could produce work to their standard; after all their photography is not only beautiful, but extremely creative and out of the box. I told them I would think about it and get back to them. At the time, I figured I would take a few days to decide. But as the minutes and hours passed that same day, I couldn’t get the offer off of my mind. I told myself I shouldn’t let fear of failure keep me from trying. I wrote back the same day and said yes. And then my heart started beating out of my chest again.

Over the past two two weeks of working with the team, planning and sharing ideas, I have been absolutely delighted by how positive and welcoming everyone has been. The environment is creative and collegial, open and honest.

Today, my first blog post for Enfants Terribles went up on their site. In the post I introduce myself and talk about the themes of kindness, creativity and connection, which are central to my approach to parenting.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the magazine, I have a short interview with Celine Hallas, one of the Editors-in-Chief at Enfants Terribles, to share with you. But first, a little bit about Celine, herself. Celine is a mother of two and a photographer with a background in children’s fashion. Celine is a big believer in everyday magic and finding adventure in little things. Her photography is undeniably beautiful and often a little quirky, as she likes to say.

Celine Hallas Enfants Terribles Magazine Editor in Chief

What is Enfants Terribles magazine all about?

ETmag was created by Sos and I and is all about playing and keeping an open heart and mind. It is about bringing together creative people from around the world and giving them a common space where they can inspire others. We want to put the spotlight on amazing real people, not just show a polished picture, but get a little look behind the facade – for better or worse! Enfants Terribles magazine aims to be different!

Why did you want to start Enfants Terribles magazine?

Sos and I wanted to create a place where it was okay to be a little, or maybe very, crazy and a place to publish that work. We couldn’t see ourselves in other children’s fashion / lifestyle magazines, so we started our own. We like having a playful and sometimes over-the-top approach – hoping this rule breaking will rub off a bit on people and encourage them to be more brave in fashion and lifestyle.

On our team we don’t have many rules and our contributors are very free in how they work with us. We hope this freedom, that can feel like abandonment to some and feel limiting to others, will encourage their creativity and spark something original.

What are your dreams for Enfants Terribles magazine?

For the magazine to maintain its credibility and freedom to be different. Which can be difficult in this industry!

Please visit the Enfants Terribles website, where all the complete issues are available for free online. You won’t be disappointed.

And, please, don’t forget to read my blog post for them here.

To see more of Celine’s photography visit her website here or you can find her on Instagram here.
